Kick off the festival weekend with Waterloo Region’s most passionate readers and writers! The Opening Showcase is the first opportunity for readers and writers to come together and listen to Canada’s brightest authors discuss their latest works. Featuring a moderated dialogue between award-winning authors Tanya Talaga and Canisia Lubrin, the showcase also features readings from The New Quarterly’s annual writing contest winners.
The Sangria Speakeasy
Friday, November 1, 2024 at the Balsillie School of International Affairs
Back by popular demand, the Sangria Speakeasy is an opportunity for festival authors to meet and mingle with fellow readers, writers, and community members. The speakeasy is held in conjunction with the Opening Showcase at the CIGI Auditorium, and honoured guests and major donors will be invited.

In real-life, we get to know a person by observing them and interacting with them, making judgments and drawing our own conclusions. But how do we recreate this experience in fiction? In this fiction workshop, award-winning author Shashi Bhat will lead an exploration of how to build and reveal fictional characters in a way that invites a reader into a story.
Choose Your Own Disaster
Saturday, November 2, 2024 at the Balsillie School of International Affairs
Featuring award-winning science fiction and fantasy author Erin Bow, this interactive world-building workshop considers how worlds suggest stories, and stories suggest worlds. This workshop will explore the kinds of scale and the suggestive details that make imaginary worlds feel real. Though focused on Science Fiction and Fantasy, this class is useful to fiction writers of all stripes.
Blending Fiction and Nonfiction
Saturday, November 2, 2024 at the Balsillie School of International Affairs
Join award-winning author Helen Humphreys in a writing workshop that straddles the blurred line between fiction and nonfiction. In this workshop, participants will discover ways to mix fiction and non-fiction together in the same project, explore emerging genres such as non-fiction novels and biographical fiction, and how they can apply these principles to their own projects.
The Literary Brunch
Sunday, November 3, 2024 at Grey Silo Golf Club
Join in on the insightful conversation between Helen Humphreys, David Huebert, and Carol Off at the festival’s closing Literary Brunch at Grey Silo Golf Club. Guests will enjoy a gourmet brunch buffet while these prolific authors speak candidly about their writing process, the characters they’ve created, and the novels they love.
